Each of the African countries had a quota of five athletes per category.

IFSC allowed registration until two weeks before the competition, therafter South Africa were allowed to fill the remainder of the 20 male and 20 female athletes limit for the qualifier.

On the day athletes from Uganda, Mauritius and South Africa competed for the first place and entry to the Olympic games in the combined Lead and Boulder category and Speed
